Dear Parents,

Welcome to 1st Grade!  I am very excited to be working with you and your child this year, and I have many fun activities planned.  Some of the topics we will be studying are community, cultures, animals, addition and subtraction facts, as well as improving reading and writing skills.

A little information about me, so you can get to know me better.  I graduated from Benedictine University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.  I have a mom, dad, one older brother, a sister-in-law, and a dog named Toby.  I was born and raised in Downers Grove, except for spending my 7th, 8th, and 9th grade years in China.  Some of my hobbies or interests are watching television and movies, sewing, cooking and baking, traveling, and the color purple.  I have traveled to many countries around the world and I have visited almost all of the 50 states.  I have always wanted to be a teacher and love being around children.

I expect your child to work hard and to be active learners in the classroom.  Homework will be given daily to enhance lessons taught and to teach your child responsibility.  The assignments should take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and should not require too much help from you.  Students are expected to turn in their homework daily and late work will be accepted up to 1 day late with a penalty.  I also encourage you to read with your child at home, either reading to your child, or having your child read aloud to you.  This will help them to develop their reading skills outside of the classroom.

We have 5 classroom rules and your child is expected to follow all of them.  We will discuss these rules in class as well as role play, so the students know what following these rules looks like.  The rules are:
1) Respect the teacher, classmates, and school.
2) Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.
3) Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
4) Walk when inside the school.
5) Follow directions.

If students follow these rules, they may get stickers, free time, or a good note sent home depending on the circumstances.  If students do not follow these rules, there will be consequences.  The consquences may be a verbal warning, time out in the thinking chair, loss of free time, contacting the parents, or seeing the principal.  The consequence will depend on the student's behavior.

After a few weeks, we will start creating a weekly newsletter.  There will be a link to the newsletter on this website.  This newsletter will include a summary of the past week, Star Student of the week, upcoming events, and reminders.  I will try to get as much student input as possible so that the students can take ownership of the newsletter.  I ask that you please give us feedback once we start posting the newsletters, so that we can improve them each time.

A list of school supplies has been sent home with your child, and can also be found on this website. The school calendar and our weekly class schedule can also be found  on this website.  Please look around and get to know this website.  Remember to check it frequently for classroom or school updates.

I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year!
